Overview of Triund Hill

Triund is a picturesque ridge located at the foot of the magnificent Dhauladhar Himalayan range. Situated roughly 9 kilometers above McLeod Ganj, it offers one of the most accessible and rewarding trekking experiences in India.

On one side, you are treated to sweeping views of the vast Kangra Valley, while on the other side, the stark, snow-covered cliff faces of the Dhauladhar rise almost vertically right in front of you.

Starting Points & Routes

Route 1: Gallu Devi Temple (Most Popular)

You can take a local taxi or auto-rickshaw from McLeod Ganj or Dharamkot up to Gallu Devi Temple. From Gallu, the walking trail is roughly 6 km long and takes 3 to 4 hours to complete.

Route 2: Via Bhagsu Waterfall

A steeper, direct trail starts from Bhagsunag village. It bypasses Gallu Devi and connects further up the ridge. Recommended only for experienced hikers due to the steep incline.

Trail Experience & Landmarks

  • First Half: Gradual incline through dense oak, rhododendron, and deodar forests.
  • Rest Stops: The midway landmark is the historic Magic Light Cafe (established 1984), ideal for tea, maggi, and energy snacks.
  • 22 Curves: The final 2 km section features "22 curves" — a sharp zigzag trail up a steep slope that requires extra stamina.

Camping Rules & Forest Permits

The Forest Department enforces strict regulations to preserve the Himalayan ecology. All trekkers must check in at the Gallu Forest Checkpost.

Important Guidelines:

• Plastic collection and ID verification take place at Gallu checkpost.

• Night camping permits are strictly monitored by local forest authorities.

• It is highly advisable to pre-book tent accommodations and licensed guides through verified local directory providers.

Best Time to Trek

  • March to June: Pleasant weather, ideal for clear sunset views.
  • Sept to Nov: Crisp autumn light and snow-capped peaks.
  • Monsoon (July-Aug): Heavy rains; slippery trail, caution advised.
  • Winter (Dec-Feb): Heavy snow at the top; trail requires proper winter gear.
